A regulation protecting national forests from road-building and logging was blocked by a federal judge who concluded that the ban would harm timber companies.
A federal judge in Idaho yesterday blocked a new government regulation protecting 60 million acres of national forests from logging and road construction, less than a week after the Bush administration reluctantly agreed to go along with the rule drafted during the Clinton years.[It] trikes a serious blow to a three-year effort by the U.S. Forest Service and environmentalists to protect more than a quarter of federal forests -- including large tracts of Alaska's Tongass National Forest -- from most commercial logging, new road construction and mining."
