Greenwich Bans Clotheslines in Public Housing

Greenwich cites concerns over aesthetics and liability.

A public housing project in Greenwich has recently banned outdoor clothes drying. Lawyers asserted that the poor nighttime visability created a safety hazard for residents.

"Project Laundry List, a clothesline advocacy group, has jumped into the fray in Greenwich, urging a letter-writing campaign to repeal the ban.

"Alexander Lee, the group's executive director, suggested that any liability concerns would center on dryers, not clotheslines. He cited federal statistics showing that dryers cause 17,000 fires a year. "
