Short sea shipping involves moving freight on the sea around the coast without crossing an ocean. The City of Miami is looking at extending the process to relieve traffic pressure, getting some big rigs off the freeway.
The City of Miami is planning two underground tunnels to allow trucks to access the Port of Miami. Until those tunnels are built, the City may be looking at short sea shipping as a way to get freight cargo off trucks on the road and onto barges on the Miami River.
Miami Today News reports that short-sea shipping could move 1,200 containers daily, taking 1,200 trucks off downtown streets, projections show. The system could be up and running in 60 to 90 days.
