Seeking federal stimulus dollars for its own set of "shovel ready" projects, Maryland submitted an application to the Federal government for $360 million to improve its passenger rail system.
Gov. Martin O'Malley recently announced Maryland's bid for federal stimulus dollars that the state would use to upgrade and improve its passenger rail system to the tune of $360 million, The Baltimore Sun reports.
Proposed projects include replacing an aging tunnel under downtown Baltimore, expanding the BWI Marshall airport rail station and opening up other bottlenecks in intercity and commuter train travel in the Northeast Corridor.
The federal stimulus dollars would only be the beginning of such investments. The final costs of these projects is expected to cost as much as about $2.5 trillion.
