San Francisco Upgrading Railway Safety Standards

Coming off the heels of two high-profile crashes with dozens of injuries, the San Francisco Municipal Railway is working to ensure operators are trained and accidents can be avoided.

"Those two crashes, which made national headlines, followed a spate of other injury accidents in recent years involving Muni and could prove costly as claims are filed against the city.

Muni chief Nathaniel Ford pointed to data collected by his agency that shows a steady decline in crashes but said there's ample room for improvement.

'Our track record has been heading in the right direction from a safety standpoint,' Ford said. 'The bottom line is we want to get to zero accidents, whether it's our fault or someone else's fault.'"
