Can you create a community with design? This is one of the questions raised at a panel hosted by Future Shack, a project sponsored by the Seattle AIA and The Seattle Times to reconsider residential architecture.
"'There is always the question of how you acquire more density," [local writer Knute] Berger said. "But along with density there has always been another factor which I think this city should pay greater attention to, including the architects that do the design work. Can you create a community with design? Is there an opportunity for neighbors to exchange information with each other, take care of each other, to look out for each other, to establish friendships with each other and provide a public safety sense for each other?'"
A debate ensued over traditional vs. contemporary architecture.
