Virginia County Increases Zoning Density Near Future Rail Stations

The changes will help bring transit oriented growth to the Dulles corridor, which will be served by a future extension of the D.C. Metro.

Fairfax County supervisors yesterday approved sweeping changes to the county's long-range plan to allow higher-intensity development of offices and apartments adjacent to proposed Metro stations in the Dulles corridor. County planners believe that clustering a mix of high-rises around the new stations -- a planning concept often called "smart growth" -- is the best way to increase the use of mass transit and decrease the number of people who clog the roads by driving from their homes to the stations.
