When it hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics next year, Vancouver will need to clear more than 30,000 vehicles off its roads everyday to avoid total gridlock. Doing so will require much cooperation from locals.
City officials have unveiled a transportation plan to reach that goal, which includes the closure of many streets, the expansion of travel passes, and an increase in transit options.
"Simply put, with an estimated 300,000 visitors and more than 5,000 athletes in Whistler and Vancouver for the 2010 Games, if the plan is to work a huge number of local residents will have to walk, bike, take transit or at the very least carpool between Jan. 1 and March 1."
