Traditional Neighborhood Development Coming To Central Florida

Horizon West, a large master planned community in fast growing Southwest Orange County, is hoping to develop several neo-traditional "villages" in the area, but nearby residents are concerned about the scale of the project.

"They've heard about it for years, first dreading it, then accepting it. Some even got excited about it. But now that the bulldozers have arrived and the mammoth Horizon West -- a series of planned "villages" -- actually is on the horizon, folks living on the rural homesteads and quiet lakefront lots near southwest Orange County's border with Lake are bracing for years of conflict and change. The Horizon West plans, hashed out in several community meetings, promised a different kind of suburb -- a cozy place where kids could walk to school and parents could run their errands at stores right around the corner. But many remain skeptical." Nearby, the community of Celebration, FL is one of the area's first examples of New Urbanist development.
