Low Profile Street Lighting Experiment To Save Baby Turtles

Street lights near a popular Florida beach cause baby turtles to wander on to roads and under cars. Experimental new light hopes to save turtles but critics say it creates safety hazard for pedestrians and cyclists.

"As of Friday, June 8, tiny light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, and foot-tall lights that stand on both sides of the road are all that will guide motorists, pedestrians and bike riders in an experiment designed to save baby sea turtles... University researchers have been commissioned by the DOT to see how sea turtles, motorists and pedestrians react to the low-profile lights...If the lights work well, they could change the way coastal roads are lighted..."
