A group of Southern California nudists is criticizing parks officials who buried a dead sea lion near their controversial stomping grounds -- a stinky development in the long battle between nudists and officials over the contested beach.
"Allen Baylis, a Huntington Beach resident who heads Naturists in the OC, fielded several calls over the holidays from fellow nudists -- some from Friends of San Onofre Beach -- who regularly visit the 1,000-foot stretch of beach. They were upset that the carcass was buried about 20 feet from where they play volleyball, he said. And they complained about the sight of a fin protruding from the sand and the stench of rotting flesh.
State parks officials say it's normal procedure to bury washed-up sea mammals at the beach and let nature take its course.
Baylis questioned why they would bury a dead animal at one of the most heavily used portions of San Onofre State Beach."
Nudity has been banned at the beach since 2008, when the California State Supreme Court refused to hear the nudists' appeal, though nude sunbathers still frequent the area.
