Instead of building its signature single family homes in dense New York neighborhoods, Habitat is expanding its model to include LEED-certified apartment buildings.
A new 41-unit apartment building in Brooklyn marks a fresh start for Habitat for Humanity in New York, where it had previously only built stand-alone, single family homes. The new LEED Gold-certified building attracted 10,000 applications for the 41 slots, with prospective tenants still required to participate in the building process. Habitat is continuing the shift with new 50- and 63-unit buildings nearly completed around the City, and $10.5 million on the way from HUD to help expand affordable housing.
