"The success of new housing on downtown Raleigh's west side is finally spreading east. Developers and buyers had long scorned the east side of downtown, which stretches about 10 blocks eastward from Wilmington Street to Tarboro Road. But now builders are finding a growing market for new homes going up in an area previously known mostly for its crack and liquor houses." Through the city's redevelopment program, 70 percent of the new homes are intended for moderate- and low-income residents, and priced under $120,000.
