Santa Clarita has requested to widen its 'sphere of influence' outside its borders. LAFCO will probably deny the request.
A designated sphere of influence is designed to give local governments a greater say over housing density and land use issues beyond its borders. Santa Clarita is requesting an increase from 47 sq. miles to 115 sq. miles. Sphere changes are common throughout the state. But Santa Clarita's proposal is unusual in its magnitude--the largest in recent years. Opposition is from major developers and landowners, including Newhall Land and Six Flags Magic Mountain.
