"As houses grow, its only logical that garages do, too. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average new house in the U.S. is now 50 percent larger than in it was 30 years ago. And from a two-car standard, weve moved up to three, four, five, and even six-bay garages. In 1989, says the NAHB, 10 percent of homes in the U.S. had three-car garages. Today, over 30 percent do. But it is one particular design, the protruding garage or "snout house," that seems to have caught the attention of the national media. Meanwhile, local planners have been grappling with zoning codes and design regulations that will satisfy home buyers, builders, and preservationists."
