A premier but decayed intersection in the city will get a boost after city commissioners approved an apartment building with stores that they had previously rejected.
The northeast corner of the Broward Boulevard/Federal Highway intersection has housed for years a group of vacant, gray buildings -- and signs heralding the news that "We've Got Big Plans for This Site." On June 19, the City Commission approved by a 3-2 vote a project called The Waverly, a 14-story building with 304 apartments, commercial space, health spa and coffee bar. Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson and Mayor Naugle voted against it, saying it was too large. Commissioner Gloria Katz, previously opposed, reconsidered because her concerns about traffic and pedestrian safety were addressed. Commissioner Carlton Moore was concerned that city projects were out of the affordable range, so the developer agreed to contribute $50,000 toward a trust fund for affordable housing."I like that," responded Moore. "You've just convinced me this project is a beautiful project for our city."
