The City of Cleveland has designated design review districts that require a hearing before demolishing potentially significant buildings. The Chester Conference Center, and most of the Cleveland Clinic campus, lie in-between protected districts.
The conference center was demolished in January without review, surprising preservationists.
Steven Litt writes, ""Where is the public dialogue?" said Kathleen Crowther, director of the Cleveland Restoration Society. "It seems like there's no discussion."
The demolition raised a host of questions, from how the Clinic handles historic preservation to how medical centers and universities often create dead zones around their edges as they grow, which can inhibit economic development and create an image of isolation."
