In Corpus Christi, Texas, a park development fee on inner city properties has developers crying foul, claiming it discourages development in inner cities where it should be encouraged.
Sara Foley writes, "For the past two years, apartment developers have been charged two types of fees aimed at creating park space before they could build. One fee charges them $200 per unit and the other requires them to either donate 1 acre of nearby property for every 200 units they build or pay the city a fee based on how much 1 acre of nearby land would cost."
A proposal goes before the Planning Commission and City Council next week to cap the fees at $62,500 per acre.
