Judaism and Food Deserts

Jewish groups in Los Angeles are taking on the lack of healthy groceries in certain parts of the city, the so-called "food deserts" of LA.

One Jewish activist says the issue is a natural for Jews, because their traditions are rooted in social justice and religious rituals that almost always involve food.

From the LA Times: "We want to transform the food deserts of Los Angeles into a promised land of access to healthy food," said Elissa Barrett, executive director of the Progressive Jewish Alliance, which helped organize a tour Sunday to showcase the problem. "Food, liberation and sustenance are closely intertwined in Judaism."

Meanwhile, the CRA in Los Angeles is tackling the issue with new grants dedicated to helping convenience stores in strategic locations ramp up their selection of healthy offerings.
