Preference Driving Move For More Homes in Cities

The EPA reports that residential construction in cities has outpaced the building of suburban homes, and that the reason is not planners dictating smart growth but the personal preference of homebuyers and renters.

The amenities that smart growth advocates promote- walkable neighborhoods, transit accessibility, accessible retail- seem to be attracting residents.

Jonathan Hiskes at Grist reports, "Overall construction has tanked in the last few years, of course. But the proportion of home building that happens in central cities has doubled since 2000 in 26 of those metro areas."
