The casual carpool system in the East Bay is quite possibly a utopian vision come to life. And it's been operating for more than 20 years.
"Everybody talks about it. It's an institution," said Iser Cukierman of Montclair. He's refering to the grassroots phenomenon that occurs regularly from about 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday. It's the result of a system that involves, by an estimate from the Rides for Bay Area Commuters report, about 8,000 East Bay people every weekday. This is how it works: at designated pick-up points throughout the East Bay (from as far and wide as Vallejo, Richmond, Orinda and Fruitvale), people who would otherwise never do such a thing get in the car of a perfect stranger who drives them to San Francisco."
