Toronto's former chief planner Paul Bedford asked his students at Ryerson University to present 100-year plans to re-imagine Toronto.
Christopher Hume looks at the students' proposals.
"The proposals vary, of course, but what's striking is the similarities. To a person, these students, most in their early 20s, suggest not just a city but a region organized around a public transit network. And what they have in mind goes well beyond the system just put on hold by the provincial government in its recent budget.
They spoke of local commuter trains, high-speed rail and an extensive subway below grade. They also talked about 'decommissioning streets,' a revolutionary idea in a city that has yet to see its way clear to a single pedestrian zone."
