The Mayor is behind the plan, saying it will revitalize the downtown. School board members are skeptical however, and are asking for more information.

Jeannette deForge writes, "School Committee member Adam D. Lamontagne pushed for the School Committee to vote against the district, saying he is still concerned as many as 3,000 units could be built and if there was just one child per home it would completely overwhelm the school district.

"Can the city of Chicopee handle that?" he asked. "I think the committee should come out against this overlay to protect the Chicopee Public Schools. I don't see anything positive about this.""
