Dublin's Bike Sharing System Finding Early Success

A new bike sharing system in Dublin is turning out to be a surprise success in the Irish city.

Launched in Fall 2009, the system consists of 450 bike and 40 docking stations. The first half-hour of riding is free, and riders are charged for any additional time the bike is used. So far, the system has been working with very few glitches.

"Despite predictions that the 450 specially-made bikes, available from 40 stations around the city, would quickly be stolen or tossed in the River Liffey by vandals, only two have been pilfered in the first six months of operation. These were quickly recovered, and none have been vandalized, according to council spokesman Paul Finan."
