New Urbanist Jeff Speck has moved his family to Lowell, Massachusetts without a car in order to experience the perspective of a carless household.
From the Boston Globe: "There is no substitute for living in a place and experiencing the daily life to see where its strengths and weaknesses are," Speck says. "Living downtown without a car is what the ideal future Lowell resident should be able to do.'"
Lowell planning director Jim Cook says that he hired Speck because the city has attracted new housing and business downtown and needs to improve its sidewalks and streetscape to keep up.
