The New York Power Authority is currently seeking a developer for the wind farm project.

Local Doug Champ is chairman of the annual Chautauqua County Energy Conference and is encouraging locals to approve the plan.

"Offshore wind is coming," Champ said. "If we choose to ignore it and its potential, it will shift somewhere else."

Tom Marks, New York Director of the Great Lakes Sport Fishing Counsel, has a different opinion.

"The Great Lakes is not a place to put wind turbines," Marks said. "These are national treasures."
