Four years ago, artist Julien Berthier put up a fake business front on a blank wall in Paris. Today the door is still there, one of a handful of fake storefronts in the world, says Geoff Manaugh.
Geoff also points to a fake brownstone in New York that is an entrance to the subway system. The disguise is intended to thwart terrorists.
Manaugh writes, "...these sorts of "fake" spaces are not uncommon at all. There are also "dummy houses" in London-specifically at 23-24 Leinster Gardens-that were constructed from the very beginning as nothing but façades. They don't even have interiors; they are simply vents for the Underground, disguised as faux-Georgian flats."
