With fruit prices way down, some farmers in British Columbia are taking their fields out of production and renting them out as RV parks. The government in Kelowna, BC, is not happy.
'When Bruce and Kathy Wiebe opened the Orchard Hill RV campground on the front yard of their 13-acre farm in 2006, they were among the first people in Kelowna to take advantage of new provincial rules allowing up to 10 seasonal campsites on a farm in support of agri-tourism.
'The priority for us is to grow food, and yes, this isn't growing food, but it's a means to growing food,' Mr. Wiebe said."
The RV campsites generate between $20,000 and $30,000 for the family. Officials in the municipal government are looking at changing the rule that allows the campsites to proliferate.
