A planned extension of Los Angeles' Gold Line light rail out through the Route 66 towns of Azusa and Glendora was sold as a way to bring transit-oriented development to struggling towns. With the economy down, will it still work?
Dan Abendschein reports that some of the projects are on track, but others have faltered due to the problems plaguing the real estate development industry everywhere:
"In Azusa, the largest planned residential development already stalled long before the city lost redevelopment funds to the state. The Rosedale housing development was planned to have 1,250 units but was put on hold in the fall of 2008 because of the national economic crisis. Only 130 units were finished."
The Station Square project in Monrovia, however, is still a go.
