Minneapolis Launches Public Bicycle Share

Minneapolis follows Denver in launching it's public bicycle sharing program today. The bicycles will provide a fast, convenient and carbon neutral means of getting around and are based on the highly successful Parisian scheme.

Hundreds of bicycles will be available at locations around downtown Minneapolis. Costs range from $5 for 24 hours to $60 for an annual subscription while the first hour is free. The program is also funded by $1.75 million from the Federal Highway Administration and $1 million from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. In celebration of the opening, Talking Heads front man and keen cyclist David Bryne will join Mayor R.T. Rybak June 17th at an event entitled, "Cities, Bicycles, and the Future of Getting Around," at the Uptown Theater.
