Nine Government bodies are working on the possibility of constructing a new gateway park where the reconstructed eastern section of the Bay Bridge will touch down in Oakland. Perkins + Will and PWP Landscape Architecture practice presented three designs to officials last week. Each chose to "exalt the journey as well as the destination."

"The elements that meet at the west edge of the bridge, transportation and industry, are every bit as central to our region as the scenic hills and bay. Instead of treating them as necessary evils, this is a place where we could take the humdrum landscape and make our passage through it memorable, not just a chore."

"The stroked lines of trees would add multitextured greens to the flat monotony of black and gray."
