"The transformation of those century-old buildings in Brooklyn seems at first like an answer to a community prayer -- trading up from industrial bleakness to residential sophistication. But to those within the manufacturing community that until recently thrived in the old buildings, and to many who live in the low-lying houses and apartment buildings surrounding it, the conversion bodes the end of something vital. To them, the changes driven by forces outside their community are less than welcome."
