"Called "Debt to Society ," the Motherjones.com project uses interactive maps and graphs to assess what the United States' obsession with locking people up has cost each state since 1980....But the centerpiece of the project is the interactive atlas and its underlying charts and graphs. This combination of features allows users to dig deep into the numbers in their own state or just get a quick view of the big picture. It's a powerful example of something the Web can do that ordinary newsprint can't touch."
