The nearby 2, 5 and 101 freeways will receive new signage as a result of the $650,000 outlay which has been deemed wasteful by members of the public during a period of straitened financial circumstances. When asked for his opinion of the project, Miguel Mendoza, of East LA replied, "in this economy why spend money on something like that?" The renaming is part of a $17 million refurbishment of the road that plans to improve safety by adding lights and rebuilding the median, due to be completed next spring.
