Mall operators across the country were getting requests for rent relief during the economic downturn, but in a sign of possible recovery, the requests have mostly dried up.
John Bemis of Jones Lang LaSalle Retail in Atlanta says that requests are down 90%. Other retailers interviewed by Retail Traffic Magazine agree, and say that demand for retail space is growing steadily.
Elaine Misonzhnik writes, "While sales are not exactly robust, same-store sales have been much healthier in 2010 than they were a year ago. In addition, cost-cutting measures that retailers implemented in 2008 and 2009, such as lean inventory strategies and reductions in head counts, have also aided retailers."
