Court Allows Use of Eminent Domain in University Expansion

New York's Court of Appeals overturned an earlier decision that prevented Columbia University from using eminent domain to build an extension of their campus.

The lone holdout, Nick Sprayregen (owner of a storage facility on the proposed site), has vowed to take the fight to the Supreme Court. The case echoes the Kelo case of 2005, in that it is private land being taken for a private (rather then public) use.

WCBS-TV reports that "the expansion plan includes 16 new buildings, two acres of open space, and an estimated 6,000 new jobs."
