In an effort to create a more diverse retail base and fill empty units retailers from an International Conference of Shopping Centers were guided through Downtown Crossing, The Rose Kennedy Greenway and South Boston Waterfront.
Downtown Crossing has been "scarred by the stalled redevelopment of Filene's block," says Donna Goodson, but Randi Lathrop of the Boston Redevelopment Authority argues that it is not "beleaguered." In contrast, "36 new businesses have opened since 2008, with 16 more slated by year's end."
"Developer Ron Druker, whose Downtown Crossing properties include the Corner Mall and most of that block, said the retail market is faring better in Boston than most cities. His tenants generate sales of $800 to $1,500 per square foot annually, while Corner Mall restaurants produce $950 a square foot."
