A 'No' Vote On Florida's 'Hometown Democracy' Amendment

The City Council of Zephyrhills, Florida is the latest public entity to come out against Amendment 4, a proposition that would require a public vote on any changes to local land use plans.

Promoters of the amendment call it "hometown democracy"; opponents say it is costly and complicated to pull off.

Zephyrhills council president Lance Smith said in the St. Petersberg Times, "It sounds good, but it really, really will be bad for the state of Florida."

Alachua County Today says that Amendment 4 "strikes fear in the heart of local governments."

Commissioner Eric May feels that Amendment 4 "could lead to frequent, chaotic elections and would slow down any local development."
