Progressive Engineer profiles Margaret Kubilins, who started a successful transportation engineering consulting firm that brings a refreshing viewpoint to the table.
In designing transportation plansfor new development, she strives to install options for low-impact,non-motorized users such as pedestrians and bicyclists. She also considersland use as an inseparable issue when dealing with transportation: "You might think work like this would do nothing but enable sprawl and line the pockets of developers. But Kubilins has developed a forward-thinking philosophy that is bringing about some changes in transportation engineering. She believes that transportation and land use are woven together, affecting the quality of peoples' lives. "You can't do one without the other. It's all intertwined,' she says. As an example, if you build a hotel on one side of a street and a restaurant on the other side, 'we need to be sure we can accommodate a pedestrian.'"
