Hawaii is an ideal test case for creating an electric car infrastructure because fuel costs are very high and distances are manageable. Charging stations are going up all over the islands with a goal of making it easy to envision driving an EV.
Russell Nichols reports that "The Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative calls for at least 3,000 electric vehicles in 2010 and 50,400 in 2015. By that time, officials plan to have a web of some 100,000 charging stations up and running that will be powered by renewable energy sources."
Some state officials are concerned that the new network of charging stations could put serious stress on the electricity grid.
