To publicize an urban agriculture project in Middlesbrough, England, organizers threw a town meal for 8,000 people sharing the food grown by the gardens. The growing experiment was so popular that many locals don't want it to stop.
280 growing sites were cultivated around the town, and organizers already have 2,000 people organized for this coming year.
From The Guardian: "This has caught people's imagination. But we've gone beyond novelty now and people want to make it a mainstream activity," says Ian Collingwood, a regeneration consultant at the council."
Middlesbrough is one of the more economically depressed towns in England. Organizers hope the gardens will improve health conditions by improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Others see this as a step in the right direction with peak oil a possibility in the near future.
