Sylmar, a suburb of Los Angeles in San Fernando Valley, has planned a series of housing projects around Metrolink commuter rail stations.
In Sylmar, a suburb of Los Angeles, mass transit agencies have partnered with developers to create "transit villages," housing developments built near commercial buildings and transportation centers. Thirteen new houses are planned for the first phase of the project with more transit villages near Metrolink stations scheduled for construction throughout six Southern California counties. Planners say the transit villages will help alleviate traffic congestion and improve quality of life for Southern California residents. The convenience of mass transit, planners say, may convince drivers to leave their cars behind to avoid long, costly commutes. Developers also expect that below average home prices and competitive interest rates will draw residents to transit villages. Ninety-six other homes are scheduled for completion in Sylmar next summer.
