Not taxis, trucks, or buses as many might have thought. It's left turning motorists -especially if they are men! And you are less likely to get struck if you jaywalk than if you cross with the light, though if you do get hit it will be more serious
New York City Dept. of Transportation has released its "Pedestrian Safety Report and Action" that analyzed the cause of pedestrian traffic injuries and fatalities in order to enable transportation planners to make walking safer in the City.
"In 80 percent of city (crashes) that resulted in a pedestrian's death or serious injury, a male driver was behind the wheel. (Fifty-seven percent of New York City vehicles are registered to men.).
The study, which the city's Transportation Department described as the most ambitious of its kind by an American city, examined more than 7,000 crashes that occurred in New York City from 2002 to 2006 and that resulted in the death or serious injury of at least one pedestrian."
"This is the Rosetta Stone for safety on the streets of New York," said Janette Sadik-Khan, the transportation commissioner.
