Citizen-led groups in Las Cruces, New Mexico struggle to rejuvenate an ailing downtown.
"On most days, the only people who can be seen in the area currently known as the Downtown Mall are the life-sized statues dotting the walkway through the eight-block area of the mall. The area that was once the center of Las Cruces is devoid of activity. Several groups have tried in vain to resuscitate the dead heart of the city. But a new citizens-led group, composed of a wide collection of Las Cruces' who's who, has organized like no group before it, buoyed by recent stories of other seemingly cursed cities who have successfully revitalized their downtown areas."
