How Philistinism and Contempt For Urban Planning Scarred England's Crowded Cities

England is now the second most densely populated place in Europe, after Malta. New data shows the UK as a whole has roughly the same density as Germany. This indicates a concentration of population in particular places and underpopulation elsewhere.

Owen Hatherley reminds readers that "densely populated areas are not necessarily slums." But after developers in the U.K. were given carte blanche, "aesthetically stunted, architecturally bumptious towers" increasingly appeared crowded around squares that quickly became wasteland.

These developments were palaces of 'value engineering,' a euphemism for meanness. Hatherley argues it was this cynical approach to design, not overcrowding which needs to be addressed.
