Legislation working its way through the Honolulu City Council could require construction companies doing work in the Hawaiian city to recycle or reuse as much as 60% of construction materials.
Waste from construction and demolition is one of the major sources of garbage in landfills. Officials in tiny Hawaii are hoping to reduce the impact of the construction industry on rapidly filling landfills.
"While the intent of the measure is supported by many local contractors, some have expressed concerns that the bill, if passed, would place an unrealistic burden on them. The 60 percent requirement, the contractors argue, may be too high and would be difficult to apply across-the-board."
