In Portland, two examples of how stealthy implementation of solar-powered technology is changing the rhythm of daily life.
On one hand, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)'s prototype solar canopy allows people to recharge mobile devices, laptops, electric bikes and electric cars, hinting at an new potential communal experience based around the simple act of charging electronics.
On the other, in downtown Portland, solar-powered trash receptacles called 'BigBellies' double as trash compactors which translate to less overflowing garbage cans and fewer pickup times for waste haulers. The business leader behind the project is set on eventually replacing all 150+ trash cans with the solar-powered models.
