The BBC reports that there is a surge in urban beekeeping in Paris, with 400 hives and growing within the city limits.
Having a hive is apparently very chic for upscale restaurants, which serve the honey on their menus. But the reasons behind the trend are not just gastronomic:
"Driving the trend is growing public awareness of the crisis in rural bee-keeping caused by the collapse in bee numbers. Oddly, city bees are not just immune to the health problems facing their country cousins - they are also far more productive."
