In the wake of several calamitous rail accidents, the Obama administration announced it would create a new federal agency to enforce safety standards on U.S. transit agencies. A new committee is now deciding just how that power will be wielded.
The new venture has been dubbed the Transit Rail Advisory Committee for Safety (TRACS) and is staffed by 24 management and labor representatives from transit agencies across the country.
Currently, according to the Washington Post, "The FTA still lacks the power to enforce minimum safety standards for the nation's transit systems, so the new committee cannot start work on regulations." Congress is considering new legislation to change that.
