The legendary Route 66, an "enduring American icon", celebrates its 75th anniversary.
"Route 66, which this year is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its creation, has become an enduring American icon. The highway lost its official U.S. route designation in 1985, but the road (two lanes for the most part, four lanes in some places) has persisted through inertia and the efforts of enthusiasts. Much of the surviving highway between Chicago and Santa Monica, Calif., has been given the quasi-official designation of Historic Route 66, marked with signs to help modern pilgrims trace large chunks of the old Mother Road."
